Mindfulness with Wally

I don’t talk about it here much but I have had a mindfulness meditation practice for about 8 years. My mindfulness mentor used to tell me stories about how she would meditate in the morning and all her pets would tuck in around her peacefully. Wally missed a critical part of that memo as he supports me in my mindfulness practice.

Phase 1: Hello! Are we doing something?

Phase 1: Hello! Are we doing something? I like when we’re together on a yoga mat.

Phase 2: Oh right! I know what we’re doing! I’ll put my head in your lap and be a good dog.

Phase 3: I need attention! Look at my belly!

Phase 3: I’m bored and need attention! Look at my belly!

Phase 4: No, I really need attention. Pay attention to me!

Phase 4: No, I really need attention. Pay attention to- hey, your knee is salty from working out.

Phase 5: Staring contest?! Pay attention! I'm literally right in front of you!

Phase 5: Staring contest?! Pay attention! I’m literally right in front of you!

The funny thing is that nearly all of these were taken on different days. Wally is such a snuggle monster and loves people that this is pretty much what my life is like when I’m on the floor in our den. Yesterday I was doing yoga upstairs and while in side angle pose Wally decided to put both his front paws on the arm that was resting on my thigh. I get so many laughs from this silly, dopey dog. Sometimes I just need to modify my practice into a loving kindness practice focusing on him to try to give back some of the abundant love that he gives me.
