Missing Climbers: You Can Help
UPDATE: It is with great sadness that I update this post to say that the search is now complete. My thoughts continue to be with Ben and Gil’s friends and families and my greatest gratitude is extended to the countless people who supported the search.
Two American climbers, Ben and Gil, are missing in Peru.
There are 3 ways you can help:
1. Share this page (http://tomnod.com/gi/peru) on Facebook, Twitter, etc.
2. Donate money using the link at the top of the page. Funds are being used for an air search.
3. Search the satellite image on the page and mark clues that might help us find Ben and Gil.
I know neither Ben nor Gil directly but as I learn more I realize that I am connected to them in many odd and unlikely ways. Today on the phone with an experienced outdoorsman friend who has contacts in Peru, I told her something to the effect of, “I don’t know them, but if The Boy or I were in their situation, I would want people to be asking anyone they know to help. Even if nothing comes of it, I’d rather ask and get a “no” than not ask and miss a “yes.”” In my humble opinion, those who love the outdoors are part of a community and it is our obligation to become allies in each others’ adventures- with joy when they are going well and with respect and support when they have deviated from the plan.
My thoughts are with the climbers, their family and friends, and those on the search.
