Ski Bums

We went skiing this weekend!

The Boy is a total pro on a snowboard (he was sponsored as a youngster) and living in Colorado we were both really excited to get as many days in the mountains as we possibly could. We got an Epic Pass (a season pass good at Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, A-Basin, and Keystone) and went in on a ski house with some friends so that we could spend the weekends skiing instead of commuting the 90 minutes from Denver to the mountains.

Our ski house

On Friday we got our gear (2 pairs of skis and 3 snowboards), our dogs, loaded up our ever trusty Jeep and hit the road. We got in with enough time to have a beer, enjoy a fire, and crash for an early morning.

On Saturday we woke up to snow! Me, The Boy, and our buddy Curt met up with other buddies Lorraine and Mark (remember them from my first backpacking trip in Colorado?) for some skiing. We decided that Keystone was the way to go and had a great time getting our snow legs back.

There was basically only one run open- a long blue. I’m not an experienced skiier so it was really cool that I’ve built enough of a skill base to start cold on a blue that would have been really sketchy for me two years ago. The run was crowded so we called it a bit early to avoid getting dinged on the white ribbon of death (our friend calls the first open run of a season that because it’s a lot of rusty skiiers/snowboarders of varying ability). That meant an early apres ski!

Breckenridge Vanilla Java Porter

It was awesome skiing with experienced skiiers who know the mountain- we learned quite a few little inside tricks about where to be and what to do. We went home and crashed in front of the fire with more beer (Breckenridge  72 Imperial Chocolate Cream Stout- amazing and decadently rich!) and the dogs.

Super giant 5×5 fireplace that probably used to be the only way to heat the house

We woke up this morning to even more powder. Curt went out to A-Basin but my neck was a bit sore so we just went to Breckenridge for some coffee. We were back in Denver before 1 and have roasted veggie enchiladas and barbacoa beef in the oven and slow cooker, respectively. Football on the tube, dogs at our feet, and we are loving Colorado ski bum weekends!
